- We pledge: No more tears on our land
In wrath, doubts dispell’d we make our stand …

Not far from Hong Kong Eatery, where Beach street
crosses Hudson street, the green leaves of all these
plane trees are hanging heavy in the lunchtime mist
on this summer day above the guys who play fake
in front of Tiananmen Memorial; hardly English
in the air much Mandarin out there, in front of the grove
of heat, ants and wheeler-dealers on the street; inside
the coolness of the China King two polyglots are finishing
a perfect meal, pc-served with a smiling bow, as though
yonder there, beyond the seas, the sceneries were just
empyreal and Hong Kong not a fretting and fuming place
but Beijing’s all excited red advertisement-mace.
